Viola Davis to play Michelle Obama in new series

Viola Davis is confirmed to play former First Lady Michelle Obama for the upcoming series First Ladies.
The show will reportedly “peel back the curtain on the personal and political lives” of past First Ladies, according to Variety.
It will focus on the East Wing, “where many of history’s most impactful and world changing decisions have been hidden form view, made by America’s charismatic, complex, and dynamic First Ladies.”
Alongside Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford will also receive screen time, although the full cast is yet to be announced.
Davis responded to the news of her new role on Twitter, writing: “Sooo proud!!! Honouring and elevating these powerful, worthy Queens with respect.”
She’s a clear fan of Obama, having marked her birthday by posting a picture of the two together.
The actress wrote: “Happy birthday to the Queen! My sis! My image of grace and beauty and intelligence!! All hail!!”
She isn’t the first actress to portray Obama on-screen, as Tika Sumpter played her in 2016’s Southside with You.
Obama herself has a lot of entertainment projects coming up, after she and her husband Barack signed a Netflix deal to produce a series and multiple movies for the streaming platform.
