Gina Torres has been cast as one of the leads of ABC’s upcoming Dracula reimagining, The Brides. The show comes from the team behind Archie Comics TV series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Riverdale and Katy Keene.
The show is described by Variety as a “female-led vampire soap opera pilot” that focuses on three immortal women who will do what they can to “maintain wealth, prestige, legacy, and their nontraditional family.”
Torres plays the leader of the three brides, Cleo. She was a queen in her mortal life and was turned into a vampire by Dracula after her husband’s death. She is described as “an impervious woman with a queenly manner” who now lives life as a New York City real estate mogul. Her challenges come from both a mysterious new person challenging her in her professional life, and the personal as her and her vampiric sisters’ relationships are tested.
This could be considered a return to the sci-fi/fantasy world for Torres, who developed a cult following from her roles on sci-fi shows like Firefly. She is currently known for her work on USA’s Suits and spinoff Pearson.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is behind the aforementioned Archie comics series, will write and executive produce the series with Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter. Maggie Kiley, who as directed the Katy Keene pilot and episodes of Sabrina and Riverdale, will direct the pilot and executive produce. Warner Bros. Television will produce.
